MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING:
MRI
is a non-invasive imaging technology that produces three dimensional detailed
anatomical images that physicians use to diagnose and treat medical
conditions. That uses strong magnetic fields and pulses of radio waves and a
computer to make pictures of organs and structures inside the body.

CONTRAST MATERIAL:
Contrast media
used to improve the visibility of internal structures in MRI or CT.
“with Contrast”
– Refers to contrast administered via
· Intravascularly
· Intraarticularly
· Intrathecally
Oral and/or
anal administered contrast won’t be considered as contrast study.
Injection of IV
contrast is part of the “with contrast” study – CT, CTA, MRI and MRA
procedures.
Injecting the
material is bundled, however, we should assign appropriate HCPCS code for the
contrast material.
Required documentation for contrast:
· Route of
administration
· Type of
contrast
· Concentration
· Amount of
contrast
CT or MRI been
performed following arthrography/discography/myelography would be considered as
“with contrast” study. Even though contrast was not documented in the CT
or MRI report.
3D Rendering / Maximum intensity projections (MIP) – 76376 &
76377
CPT 76376 – 3D
rendering with interpretation and reporting of CT, MRI, US- Not
requiring image post-processing on an independent workstation
CPT 76377 - 3D
rendering with interpretation and reporting of CT, MRI, US- Requiring image
post-processing on an independent workstation
- Would
be reported with CT services based on 3D documentation.
- Should
not be reported in conjunction with CTA & MRA
